What is a Tissue?

In multicellular organisms, cells that are similar in structure and work together to achieve a particular function form a tissue. This allows for a highly efficient division of labour.

Plant Tissues

Plants have two main types of tissues: Meristematic and Permanent. Meristematic tissues are found in growing regions and possess the ability to divide. Once they lose this ability, they differentiate into permanent tissues. Simple permanent tissues include parenchyma, collenchyma, and sclerenchyma. Complex permanent tissues like xylem and phloem transport water and food.

Animal Tissues

Animal tissues are broadly classified into four types:

  • Epithelial Tissue: Forms protective coverings and linings.
  • Connective Tissue: Includes bone, blood, cartilage, and areolar tissue.
  • Muscular Tissue: Striated, unstriated, and cardiac muscles responsible for movement.
  • Nervous Tissue: Made of neurons that rapidly receive and conduct electrical impulses across the body.
