Why Do We Fall Ill? Understanding Diseases
Health and Disease
Health is a state of physical, mental, and social well-being, heavily dependent on our physical environment and economic status. A disease represents a specific discomfort or malfunction, categorized as either acute (short-term) or chronic (long-term).
Causes of Disease
Diseases have multiple levels of causes. Infectious diseases are caused by external agents like viruses, bacteria, fungi, and protozoans, spreading through air, water, physical contact, or vectors (like mosquitoes). Non-infectious diseases are caused by internal factors, such as genetics or lifestyle.
Treatment and Prevention
Treating infectious diseases involves managing symptoms and using targeted drugs (like antibiotics for bacteria) to kill the pathogen. However, prevention is always better than cure. Public health hygiene, safe drinking water, and proper nutrition are general preventive measures. Specific prevention is achieved through vaccination, which trains our immune system to remember and fight off specific microbes.
